Difficulty in making decisions is definitely a huge part of this novel because if Cal had not made the decision to help Gretchen, she might still be with her abusive family. The difficult part of the decision making is when he tries to help and ends up in jail for making the wrong decision. Making decisions is a huge part of life and unfortunately doesn't get easier with age. Cal grew throughout the novel and I believe he has learned how to make a healthy decisions versus just acting and getting in trouble.
Fighting against wrong doing is what I believe to be the most important theme throughout the book. Cal does an excellent job standing up for people or animals that deserve better. Cal rescues the bunny from the kids, he helps the McClusky's dog, and most importantly he helps get Gretchen out of her abusive home and I bet she'll be forever thankful to Cal for helping her through her tough situation. Cal got himself put in jail for a while because he knew that what was happening in Gretchen's home was not okay and he was willing to get himself in trouble to help Gretchen. Cal really shows us what it is like to fight against wrong doing throughout this novel.
