i was extremely shocked by the death of Dimmesdale, such sad news in such a small town. Even though Dimmesdale had sinned, he was still a good man and it's sad to see him go. I wish that him and Hester would've had the chance to leave and live a wonderful life together with their daughter but sometimes things happen for a reason. It's just a shame that we don't know what this reason is. Maybe this was Dimmesdale's punishment. Hester was publicly shamed and everyone in town knew of her sins while no one knew of Dimmesdale's. Maybe death was his form of punishment for not coming clean. I hope that my descendants here of this story and learn that lying or not coming clean about something will only result in a horrible consequence, maybe even death. After all, honesty is the best policy.

I had never thought of it like that. Maybe God was saying, if you lie, and hide your sins, you will be punished. If he would have confessed in the beginning, maybe he would just have to stand on the scaffold with Hester, but after hiding it for so long, his punishment worsened. I still wish that Hester and Dimmesdale could have gone to Europe and spent their life together.

I completely agree with you Miranda. There is no other way to go about things than telling the truth. Ultimately, lying will only come back to hurt you in the long run. The death of Dimmesdale is truly a devastating thing and hopefully people can take this event and use it to gain knowledge and an important life lesson.

How very insightful, Miranda. I also agree that perhaps Dimmesdale's death was a punishment for concealing his sin for so long, when Hester was forced to bear the whole weight of the crime for so many years. I agree that honesty is the best policy, especially in such a small Puritan community, where punishments are incredibly severe. I only wish that we had treated Hester with more mercy, and understood the pain of her immense burden.

I agree with you Miranda. Dimmesdale's death was very devastating and sad. He could have lived a very prosperous and happy life with Hester and Pearl. However, I think that Dimmesdale did not deserve to die. The guilt that always haunted him and torture from Chillingworth was enough punishment. Maybe if Dimmesdale would've admitted to his sin he might still be alive.
