I choose this part of Cal talking about Gretchen because the Cal that originally met Gretchen would probably say that Gretchen is the danger because she is weird and creepy. The Cal that has become closer to Gretchen knows that the danger he feels is because of her father and the domestic violence she has to deal with all the time. He feels bad for her due to her situation and he is picking up on the anger and danger that looms over her due to her father's actions. I believe that this is an important moment in Cal's relationship with Gretchen.
